Building Europe’s First Pan-European Master in High Performance Computing

EUMaster4HPC is a European initiative coordinated by a consortium of leading universities, research institutions, supercomputing centres, and industry players, supported by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. As part of this funded project, the consortium developed a pilot programme for the first pan-European Master’s degree in High Performance Computing (HPC), built on a shared vision of future HPC education in Europe.

Over three academic cycles, the programme was delivered as a two-year, 120 ECTS double-degree path.

The learning environment offered not only a robust academic foundation in HPC, but also strong international and practical dimensions. Students participated in annual summer schools hosted in various European locations, international competitions, thematic workshops, and major HPC events. In addition, they completed internships at companies or supercomputing centres, where they also developed their thesis projects.

EUMaster4HPC offered financial support in terms of:

  • Mobility scholarship (funded by EuroHPC) of € 5.000/year for two years (overall 10.000 €)
  • Total exemption from local university fees for two years (at both Universities)

As part of this project, Politecnico di Milano established double-degree agreements with Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), Université du Luxembourg and with Sorbonne Université.

EUMaster4HPC graduates received two official master’s degrees: the Laurea Magistrale in HPC Engineering awarded by Politecnico di Milano + a master’s degree awarded by the hosting partner university (referred to their local master of science).

The EUMaster4HPC project has received funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 101051997

The project has now reached its planned conclusion, as it was conceived as a pilot programme covering a limited number of academic cycles. Nevertheless, the legacy of EUMaster4HPC lives on through the educational models, strategic partnerships, and expertise it has developed – serving as a foundation for future European collaboration in HPC education.
