Our History

The HPC Engineering programme was launched in the autumn of 2022

The initiative was launched through the collaboration between the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) and the Department of Mathematics (DMAT), with strong involvement from the Laboratory of Modelling and Scientific Computing (MOX). Since its inception, the educational project has gradually expanded, incorporating contributions from faculty members of other departments to create a highly interdisciplinary programme.

This integration of skills is a natural choice for a field like High Performance Computing, which requires a solid foundation in numerical methods, advanced computing architectures, and a deep understanding of scientific and engineering applications. The interdisciplinary approach makes it possible to train professionals capable of tackling the complexity of real-world problems, developing large-scale efficient solutions, and engaging with a variety of application domains.

The initiative has attracted strong interest from industry, which actively supported the establishment of the new degree programme. It addresses a clear gap in the current educational landscape, meeting a growing demand for specialised skills in High Performance Computing — an enabling technology for a wide range of applications, from artificial intelligence to advanced simulations and large-scale data analysis

Training engineers who can design and leverage these technologies means preparing professionals capable of tackling and managing complexity, turning it into innovation and value for society.

Students of HPC Engineering can rely on a personalised guidance and counselling service provided by the Programme Manager. The Programme Manager is a constant point of reference throughout the entire study path, whom you can contact for:

  • guidance
  • clarifications on admissions, study plans, course selection, or formal requirements
  • support in organising their individual study path
  • a point of contact in case of cross-cutting doubts or difficulties, whether academic or organisational

This support channel helps strengthen the relationship between students and the degree programme, facilitating access to information and promoting a more informed, shared, and smooth university experience.

Learning Environment

The HPC Engineering programme is designed to offer an intensive yet well-supported learning experience, where students are guided and assisted in strengthening their theoretical, practical, and transversal skills.

Small class sizes foster a direct and continuous relationship with faculty members, allowing for more personalised attention and greater peer-to-peer interaction. This environment encourages collaboration, exchange of ideas, and the development of a true learning community.

Taking part in international events, such as the EuroHPC Summit, offers a valuable opportunity to experience learning beyond the classroom, strengthen connections, and build a true sense of community.
