Student associations at Politecnico di Milano offer a valuable opportunity to enrich your academic journey, explore personal interests, develop soft skills, and work in multidisciplinary teams. These are student-run organizations that promote a wide range of activities—technical, cultural, social, and sports-related—as well as hackathons and themed challenges, helping to build an active and engaged university community.
Many associations include IT-focused divisions, and some even have dedicated teams working on HPC, numerical simulation, or the management of intensive computational workloads.
As an HPC Engineering student, you could make a meaningful contribution in these contexts. You’ll have the chance to apply your skills in real extracurricular projects, collaborate with students from other fields, and engage with industry professionals—enhancing both your academic and professional development.
If you're ready to get involved, reach out to the associations that interest you to learn how you can contribute and how to apply to join their teams!
Here are some examples of student associations that are particularly aligned with the disciplinary areas of our degree programme
- Dynamis PRC: Student association that takes part in Formula SAE, an international competition for racing car prototypes. Students design and build race cars (including autonomous vehicles), working on simulations, control systems, sensors, and performance optimisation. The technical team covers areas such as CFD simulation, dynamic modelling, and embedded software development, where HPC skills are becoming increasingly important.
- PoliSpace: The first university association in Italy dedicated to space and aerospace engineering. Students develop innovative projects related to space missions, satellites, rockets, and scientific instruments. Skills in simulation, data processing, numerical computing, and algorithm optimisation are essential for many of the working subgroups.
- Fly-Mi – Euroavia: A European association of aerospace engineering students, with an active chapter at Politecnico di Milano. It fosters connections between students and the aerospace industry by promoting projects, company visits, conferences, and international competitions. HPC skills are essential for simulation, prototyping, and the analysis of complex aerospace systems.
- Skyward Experimental Rocketry: An association focused on the design and construction of high-altitude experimental rockets. It involves advanced activities in physical modelling, fluid dynamics, structural analysis, and simulation software, often supported by HPC tools.
- PoliMi Motorcycle Factory: A multidisciplinary team that designs, builds, and tests electric racing motorcycles. Some sections of the team focus on numerical simulations, vehicle dynamics, data management, and telemetry, where HPC tools and predictive models are essential.
- PMDS – Polimi Data Scientists: An association that promotes training in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. It organises workshops, coding challenges, projects, and seminars with companies. HPC students can contribute especially to large-scale data analysis projects, deep learning model training, and the management of complex data pipelines.
- MESA – Milan Engineering Student Association: Founded in 2016, MESA brings together students from all fields of engineering. The association promotes interdisciplinarity and offers opportunities to collaborate on technical projects, where HPC can be applied across various engineering domains.
- AIM – Associazione degli Ingegneri Matematici: A meeting point for students interested in applied mathematics. It promotes cultural activities, seminars, and collaborations with both academia and industry. It offers an excellent environment for those working on numerical models, mathematical simulation, optimisation, and computational methods.
